The Skunk

days before we sheltered in place

in the early dawn hours

crawling closer, digging below our house

looking for a safe, warm, dry place 

die she did, her scent sacs bursting

so deep under our foundation

no one can interrupt her final rest

we must wait, sheltered in place

for her memory to pass on

if only the smell would dissipate
