Artemis in the Suburbs

By Pascale Lowell, TIWP Student

I am restless here.
I want to wander in a forest
and lose myself among the trees.
I want to feel moist dirt
under my bare feet
and hear the river call hello.
I want to lie on the bank
and sing with the birds,
sit in the trees,
cradled by their branches
and sleep there
without dreams.
I want to feel
sap in my veins and
flowers in my hair.
I want to feel strong enough
and brave enough
to face down death
and win.
I want to run away
from a society
that doesn’t want me
as I am.
