We learn how to care for others. “Treat them how you would like to be treated.” But no one ever teaches us how we should treat ourselves. So yes, I think it makes sense that there is a lack of compassion. We are all taught to “treat others how we want to be treated” but when we show ourselves compassion, it’s selfish and rude. Spread the joy, “fill other peoples buckets” but also you can’t fill your own?! Well, then l have an empty bucket! “Sharing is caring” but what if I don’t want to share? My body is my own and I frankly don’t care if you want me to share. We are taught to be dependable and that sacrifice is equal to strength. But how is someone supposed to depend on me when I can’t depend on myself? Before we teach the “Golden Rule” we should teach the “Platinum Rule”—to treat yourself like that amazing person you are. Love yourself until your cheeks are sore from smiles and your heart is about to burst. Speak kindness and joy. Create the world you know you deserve to live in.
