Deserving

By Elle Gordon, TIWP Student

What makes a life deserving to be lived?
An A average?
Valedictorian?
Dream job?
X amount of volunteer hours?
Low screen time?
Low carbon footprint?
X amount of protest?
Going through a tragedy?
What makes a life deserving of being lived?
It is as if we are all in a video game.
Up jump left down right.
We are all looking for the key to make our lives worth something.
But there is no key so we continue to
up jump left down right,
up jump left down right,
up jump left down right
until the three little hearts in the corner are empty instead of pink and sparkly.
Some people know the real key to worth is to quit the game.
Some know and turn off the controller.
Some know but are too sucked in.
Some remain clueless to society‘s game.
The ones who quit know they’re the only ones who can make their hearts glisten,
that from the second they were born, their life had worth,
and that life can only be lived,
not measured.
