True Colors

By Grace Kelly

A tribute to Darnella Frazier inspired by a discussion of https://www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/media/darnella-frazier-george-floyd-trial/2021/04/20/9e261cc6-a1e2-11eb-a774-7b47ceb36ee8_story.html

She bore witness to something
so unbearable to see.
She bore witness to something
so painstakingly horrid.

She bore witness
to watching a man’s life leave his eyes,
to watching a heart go silent,
a heart that had beat to the man’s own rhythm
moments before.

She bore witness to the police officer,
someone who was trained to protect,
kill a man because of a color that was different from his own.

She bore witness
to the unjust system that tightens its grip
on this unjust country day after day.

She bore witness
to watching her own mind tear itself apart,
to seeing something so traumatic but having no way of stopping it.

She bore witness
to her instinctive reflex that reached for her phone,
to capture a moment in time that would echo throughout our nation
and become part of its history.

She bore witness
to a country that preaches freedom and equality
but fails to meet those expectations.

She bore witness
to a country so broken and divided
that it would be a joke to call it the “promised land.”

She bore witness
to every fault our nation hides away.
She bore witness
to the true colors of America.
