New Friend Syndrome

By Tallulah Armstrong-Temple, TIWP Student

I know I fall too hard
And forget too fast
Swear I love you in the moment
But the moment never lasts
I wish I could hold on to someone
But even though I try
Friendships always seem to crash

I call it new friend syndrome
Doesn’t matter who you are
Our fate isn’t written in the stars
I’ll be perfect
I’ll be worth it
But the shine only lasts so long
And I’ll be right back at the start
Someone’s new best friend

You could be perfection
You could be a mess
You could be whatever
We’ll always be a loose end
Things will grow and change
But some facts remain the same
I’ll never be more than
A new friend

I call it new friend syndrome
Doesn’t matter who you are
Our fate isn’t written in the stars
I’ll be perfect
I’ll be worth it
But the shine only lasts so long
And I’ll be right back at the start
Someone’s new best friend
